In this series of four presentations, participants will be introduced to Conscious Discipline and other best practices that support the skills of self-regulation, calm, and composure in children, as well as the adults in their lives. Young children do not naturally have the skills to self-regulate their strong emotions and behaviors, nor to recover from them. They need to be explicitly taught and guided in these skills by trusted and safe adults. Young children also need the adults who are teaching them to be self-regulated and to practice and model calm and composure.

Through the lens of the Conscious Discipline curriculum and other early childhood best practices, participants will enhance skills in developing, practicing, modeling, and teaching composure to young children. Strategies include breathing and other calming strategies; creating a Safe Place/ Calm Corner in a classroom; creating safe rules and expectations; and more. Participants will also acquire strategies to manage their own stress and to maintain composure in both stressful classroom situations and in circumstances outside of the classroom.

Goals:
• Participants will have an understanding of the main components of the Conscious Discipline curriculum and how it relates to composure and self-regulation.
• Participants will be able to describe the Adult-First model of Composure which is a first step in modeling and teaching children self-regulation and composure strategies.
• Participants will be able to apply concepts and strategies from the presentation that enhance composure and self-regulation in children in their settings.
• Participants will be able to apply concepts and strategies from the presentation that support themselves in maintaining their own self-regulation and composure, both inside and outside of the classroom.
